We’re looking for a VP of Engineering to manage a software development organization made up of several engineering teams. We need someone who is a deeply technical engineer at heart and excited about doing code and design reviews, growing up-and-coming coders, but can also manage a budget, forecasting and resource planning. Comfortable working in a high-change, high-growth environment and acting decisively to get things done without reckless abandon. Someone with an eye toward fostering a strong team culture especially in diversity and inclusion. Low-ego and able to collaborate across all levels of the business and technology to build strong relationships in order to deliver a superb resident and associate experience. Organized, accountable, and action-oriented with the ability to both live and teach those skills.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical vision for how we build the product and use technologies to inform our product roadmap across residents, associates, and investors
  • Determine software roadmap for when to build custom applications, vs. invest in purchased solutions, vs. technical partnerships
  • Hire, develop, and coach a high-performing diverse team of managers and engineers.  Responsible for the growth and retention of high-talent engineers.
  • Lead multiple teams focused on product engineering through a rapid growth phase of the company lifecycle
  • Define goals and oversee engineering execution with an overall goal of excellence in code quality and seamless, rapid code deployment
  • Partner closely with the product management team to align the product and technical roadmaps
  • Focus on scoping, resourcing, and capabilities to meet expected outcomes related to delivery and finances. Ability to deliver consistently on time, on budget, and on point regarding quality.
  • Select and manage vendors who provide solutions in a manner that delivers high business value and technical assurances
  • Responsible for vendor negotiations specifically related to engineering outcomes, staff augmentation models, and skill assessment of assigned technical resources
  • Build a reputation, both internally and externally within specific space of single-family home rentals and more broadly, software development

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or related experience
  • 15+ years of experience in software development and architecture 
  • 10+ years of experience managing engineering teams 

Skills/Specialized Knowledge

  • Knowledge of technical, operational, and cultural structures required to scale teams in a high-growth environment 
  • Strong technologist with knowledge of various architectural styles including layered, monolithic, client-server, or component-based
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize appropriately, and maintain standards when it comes to attention to detail
  • Can prepare and communicate concise, impactful updates at the Executive level, but can also dig into the details when investigation and analysis are needed
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, high emotional intelligence (EQ), and ability to drive alignment among differing perspectives
  • Knowledge or awareness of both core and modern languages such as Javascript, Typescript, node.js, React, Java, Objective C, Swift, Kotlin, C/C++,.Net, SQL
  • Aware of IOT and AI evolving trends
  • Experience with cloud architecture and management
  • Experience with security software, architecture, and testing
